Chapter 3: Duties of the Latrine Orderly

This chapter starts off on a boat where men from the 506th were cramped on an old India mail line and passenger ship called Samaria. It was only meant to house 1000 people but in this case it had 5000 men. It conditions were horrible - Such as that their was little fresh water, the showers ran salt water, they slept in their clothes, the food was tasteless, and the stench of having so many bodies was horrible.

The men were sent to Aldbourne which was a small English settlement. They also trained here. However, they had to be as orderly as possible and had to save their partying for London.

This chapter focusing on a dispute between Sobel and Winters (Another first lieutenant) when Sobel ordered Winters to check the latrines at 1000. Winters did so at 1000 but apparently Sobel sent a message at 945 to Winters, but he didn't get it. Sobel was about to repremand Winters told him to appear before a courts-martial or accept the punishment that was given. However, he didn't and started arguing with Sobel in letters. The higher ranking NCO's of the 506th planned a meeting and would quit if Sobel didn't stop this. However, Sobel was sent to another training camp in place of this one. This ended the problem and everyone was alright.
